In keeping with the ancient Chinese origin and tradition of dragon boating, Adelaide Phoenix Dragon Boat Club based its foundations on the symbolism of the Chinese mythical firebird Fenghuang, dating back into antiquity.
The phoenix (Fenghuang) is derived from the combination of the first two mythical phoenixes - the Feng, male and Huang, female to symbolise a harmony of Ying and Yang.
The phoenix carries with it eternal truths and is immortal; able to rise from the ashes of death. The phoenix will only stay where there is just rule and is a symbol of great power, prosperity and grace.
Its power is sent from the heavens and is passed on to its people who are bestowed with the qualities of foresight, commitment, loyalty and strength.
